Tip of the Week: Disabling Reading Layout in Word
Some well intentioned nerd up in a stuffy software development lab on the Microsoft campus decided that you want to see new Word documents in 'Layout' mode. If you've noticed that whenever you open a Word document that you got via an e-mail attachment (or maybe you didn't realize why it was happening) it starts up in this strange Layout mode.
IF you hate this setting as much as I do, here's how you disable it:
Launch Microsoft Word
1. Click the "Tools" menu and choose "Options".
2. When the "Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click "General".
3. Uncheck "Allow starting in Reading Layout".
4. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.
Headwhack of the Week: Disabling FireFox 3's confusing "Awesome Bar"
One of the new features in FireFox 3 is something called the Smart Location Bar a.k.a. the Awesome Bar. This new feature will "suggest" 12 bookmarks or previously accessed web pages as you type something into the Address bar.
While some are finding this helpful, a whole bunch of users are getting confused by it. If you want to get rid of this new feature, check out this nifty video on Cnet.com!

Commtouch Labs does a quarterly analysis of where malware is coming from around the world and Verizon, Telecom Italia, and Brasil Telecom top the botnet charts in Q2 of 2008.

This Week's Show: The Fabulously Fantastical Firewall!
The Internet is the world's largest computer network and if you have a connection (if you don't, you couldn't be reading this!) you need a firewall.
A firewall is the best way to put a barrier between you and the 2 billion knuckleheads that are also connected to the Internet. A handful of those knuckleheads are constantly probing the Internet to see which of you aren't properly protecting yourself so they can take advantage of you.
Firewalls are an essential part of the Internet connected computer, but they come in many flavors. Listen-in as the Data Doctors discuss all the ins and outs of the Fabulously Fantastic Firewall!
