Is there any way for me to regain my missing colors?

I recently had to reformat my computer and after I did so, it no longer had 256 colors-only 2 and 16. My question is, is there any way for me to regain my mising colors?

This question was answered on July 16, 2005. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.
Try booting into safe mode and change the refresh rate to the lowest option available
and then to 256 colors.
