Cryzip virus holds your files hostage!

Question

Trojan.Cryzip holds your documents hostage!

Answer

This question was answered on March 23, 2006. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.

Most viruses are designed with a very specific task in mind -- breaking your computer. One of the latest viruses, however, simply encrypts your personal files until you pay a fee for the password. Once infected, victims are instructed to transfer $300 to an e-gold account in exchange for the password to unlock their word processing, spreadsheet, and database documents.

If you've been infected by Trojan.Cryzip, use the following password to unlock your files:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VC98

*Note: The password is case sensitive*

Removal instructions are as follows:

1. Disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP).

2. Reinstall your Symantec antivirus program.

3. Update the virus definitions.

4 Run a full system scan and delete all the files detected.

Virus definitions for this threat have been available since March 12th, so if your anti-virus software is up-to-date, you should be able to avoid an infection.
