How do I install a device driver for my new sound card?

I inserted a PCI sound card (generic) and turned on the computer. Win 95 came up with the familiar "have found an unknown device and it is installing it..." whe it asked for the drivers disk, my friend browsed to a folder that was for a completely different sound card, and of course it did not work. In the Device manager, it has an excamation mark and it says that the card is not functioning properly, or that the drivers are installed wrong. We tried to upgrade the drivers, and it says that there are no updated drivers in that folder (the right one), we tried removing the card from the device manager, but when we reboot, win95 says that it found the same card and it reinstalls the same bad(wrong) drivers. Is there a way to "tell" w95 to disregard the wrong association for the plug and play card and start over again?

This question was answered on June 17, 1999. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.
It is recommended that you find the right device driver for the sound card that you have. You can do that by going to the manufacturer's web site and dowmload it or you could get it from the store you bought the sound card from. First you remove the sound card from the device manager in the system properties by selecting the device and click remove. Then go to the control panel and click on add new hardware and have windows search for the new hardware and install the right device driver.
