A serious bug has surfaced in Microsoft Access 97 that can potentially corrupt user databases, without most users being aware of it. According to many users, the bug affects Access 2, Access 95, and Access 97. Microsoft can only verify that it affects Access 97. The bug can potentially cause edits to a record to be applied to a different record, which effectively corrupts the data in both of them. It appears that it only happens to Access database applications that rely on VBA programming, where the program modules use the commands "RecordsetClone" and "Bookmark" to move to a different record, which is a fairly common programming technique. A Microsoft spokesman has said that a temporary fix is being readied and will be posted to the Microsoft Knowledge Base as soon as it becomes available.
