Often users delete files of various sorts and believe that they are gone, but that is not the case! Most email programs retain these trashed email items in a folder called roughly, deleted items. To find this folder go to start/find/then enter *delete*, this should bring maybe a few deleted items folders. First and foremost double click on each folder checking the contents, once you ARE SURE that this is the folder you want deleted drag it to the recycle bin and empty the trash.
Although a note should be added here. Even truly deleted items can be recovered from computer systems if the desire is strong enough. For instance many lawsuits in California including the Microsoft anti-trust case have used data recovery techniques to support their case against Microsoft by recovering deleted emails.
