What is the difference between RDRAM and SDRAM?

We are looking into buying a new computer, and would like to know the difference between RDRAM and SDRAM. Which would be the best?

This question was answered on October 21, 1999. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.
RDRAM stands for Rambus Dynamic Random Access Memory. This is a new generation of memory developed by the RAMBUS Inc. that will be used in future computer systems. As of this writing (10/99) the chipset that is necessary to use RDRAM is still in development. Estimates for release of this new architecture has been from the end of '99 to the middle of 2000. Even if it were available right now, you would be paying very high prices because it would be first generation product. My advice is not to wait for this new technology as it will most likely take the better part of a year before it is mainstream and cost effective.
SDRAM stands for Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory. This is the memory that is the most current as far as mainstream production computer systems. Most every computer that you will be pricing will use this type of RAM at this point in time.
