Question

Bug Alert for McAfee VirusScan 4.5 (Corporate Edition)!

Answer

This question was answered on September 15, 2000. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.

An incompatibility between Network Associates' McAfee VirusScan 4.5 (the latest corporate edition) and Windows 95 or 98 has been verified.

This bug centers around the use of Defrag and Scandisk on systems that have VirusScan 4.5 installed. Running either of these utilities while VirusScan is running will generally cause a lockup that requires a reboot of the system. For the time being, disabling VirusScan prior to running either of these utilities is work-around. To disable VirusScan, simply right-click on the "V" icon in the Systray (bottom right corner next to the clock) and select disable.

McAfee is aware of the problem and is planning to release a fix for the bug in its upcoming October service pack release.
