Why doesn't my machine shut down correctly?
Question
Cannot shut windows 98 down. When I shut the program down, I click the shut down button, then I click the second shut down button, the program shuts down, goes to the window "windows is shutting down" then reboots. The only way I can shut the program down is when the window "windows is shutting down" appears, is to turn the power off. This works O.K. as when it is started up again it reboots O.K.

In many instances, the problem is not actually Windows, but one of the programs that is running in the background. When you tell Windows to shut down, it alerts all running programs to shut down and then it waits for them do to so. If a program does not clear itself from memory, then Windows continues to wait. This waiting game is what most of us experience. Remove as many things from your system startup as you can. In addition, any of the program icons that appear in your Systray (bottom right corner next to the clock) can be manually shutdown to see if it is causing the hangup during shutdown. Generally you can right-click on the icon and close, exit or disable the utility.
In some cases, a hidden utility may be able to help. Click start, run and type msconfig. Click advanced and then click the checkbox for Disable System Rom Breakpoint.
