Norton System Doctor and Windows ME bug found!

Question

Norton System Doctor and Windows ME bug found!

Answer

This question was answered on February 2, 2001. Much of the information contained herein may have changed since posting.

A problem has been found for users of Windows ME and Norton System Doctor. It appears that during the update of Microsoft's Internet Explorer and the Service Pack 1 update, Norton Systems Works 2001 can get crossed up and may create tens of thousands of zero byte .INF files. This bug will cause slow system performance because it is creating thousands of files in the C:\WINDOWS\INF and C:\_RESTORE\TEMP directories.

Symantec (Norton) acknowledges the problem but as of yet no patch is available.

For the time being, users of Norton System Doctor should disable it or uninstall it before installing the IE Service Pack 1 update.
